?CM Punk Makes Shocking Return to WWE: Length of WWE Deal, Who Knew Backstage

CM Punk’s shocking return to WWE at this week’s Survivor Series 2023 was overseen directly by WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque.

The Best in the World returned in the closing moments of the show, in his first appearance at a WWE Premium Live Event since the 2014 Royal Rumble.

Punk was fired from AEW in September 2023 following a week-long investigation into his backstage altercation with Jack Perry at AEW All In.

CM Punk had an hour-long conversation with Triple H last week, according to Fightful Select. Punk told at least one person about this conversation.

WWE staff, representatives, and those in creative had no idea that Punk was going to return. While Punk walked through the backstage in plain sight minutes before his return, that part of the backstage area had been cleared out.

Triple H

Triple H took over calling the show in the last few minutes of WWE Survivor Series. It was WWE’s Head of Creative who called for the copyright logo to appear, giving a false finish to the show and making Punk’s return a bigger surprise.

Speaking at the post-show press conference, Triple H said he is thrilled with Punk’s return and that WWE is where he belongs.

Many in production were not aware of what was going to happen. Talent involved in the main event were told “very shortly” before the Men’s WarGames match that CM Punk would be coming out.

The deal between WWE and CM Punk is believed to be “several years in length” according to PW Insider. Their report reiterated that Punk and WWE had their first communications over the last week.

CM Punk’s return to WWE excited the fans in Chicago but left one Superstar absolutely furious.

While the WWE Universe was elated, Seth Rollins was not at all impressed with CM Punk’s WWE return at Survivor Series 2023.

Seth Rollins

The fan footage shows Rollins getting angry after Punk made a shocking return at the final premium live event of the year. Interestingly, Rollins is one of the last superstars to face Punk in WWE.

The first footage shows Rollins getting angry at the referee after Punk’s music played in the arena. The members of Team Cody walked out of the cage after Punk entered the arena. The second footage shows Rollins walking towards Punk to confront him.

Of course, there were WWE officials to stop the World Heavyweight Champion. Rollins’ reactions to Punk’s comeback have been the talk of the town and there’s a second hint that he will be facing the former WWE Champion at Wrestlemania 40.

Rollins has talked about Punk in a few interviews. Earlier this year, he slammed Punk and called him selfish. “Punk and Logan Paul are two different personalities but they’re both as selfish as it comes and if you’re not gonna help, then I don’t want you to be a part of our industry, I don’t want you to be a part of our company and that’s all there is to that,” Rollins told Fox Sports Radio earlier in 2023.

There is a storyline between them and it remains to be seen if WWE also decides to carry on with this. Their match could take place at Wrestlemania 40.

It will be interesting to see if Punk straightaway gets a title match or if he has to earn a title opportunity.

He could either win the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber to earn a World Heavyweight Championship match against Rollins.

Rollins, who became the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion at Night of Champions in May this year, is expected to drop the title at the Biggest event of the year in 2024.
